Stephen ColemanThe Gospel of Matthew attempts to answer the question, “Who is Jesus Christ?” He begins to answer that question and tell his story with a genealogy of Jesus’ family. It is an interesting start to his story. This passage is also an interesting way to begin the season of Advent. Jesus’ genealogy is not your typical Advent passage. Most of us tend to skip over genealogies when they appear in the Bible. The names are hard to pronounce and most of the people we do not recognize or know. Yet there is some significance to the names and people in Jesus’ family, especially with the four women that are included. Gathering with family and friends are big part of Advent and Christmas. As we gather Jesus family, we will gain an understanding of how his past can give us hope both now and in the future, as well as help us understand the importance and meaning of his birth.

Dr. Peter MoonWhen we sit down to enjoy our blessings, whether they are in the Promised Land, or at our tables, it is critical that we stop and give thanks. We always need to remember that from which we came, and the place to which God has brought us. Stopping to remember and give thanks places us in this spiritually potent place of humility, out of which the bounty grows from our lives as well as our tables. When we live in the Promised Land of plenty, thanksgiving is a spiritual necessity. Gratitude is necessary, powerful, and transformational.

Dr. Peter MoonAll of us have had an experience where we had high expectations (even with God) and it turned out ok, but not great. This was the case in Jerusalem when the second temple was completed in the Haggai 1:15b-2:9 reading. It was nice, but nothing like that which was before. In our reading from Luke 20:27-39, Jesus alludes to the wonder of eternal life with God, while those around speak of it in earthly and modest tones. It is important to remember that there will be disappointments in this life, even with the wondrous promises of God. The call is to not lose faith, nor let the disappointment cloud our view of the glory of God and the future that is yet in store.

Serving with the poor matters, especially for a church with such vast resources. This week, we will focus on the priority of offering acts of mercy and serving our community. Dr. Peter MoonScripture: Matthew 25:24-30The Parable of the Five Talents is about stewardship on two levels. One is personal. God has given us financial resources. We are to invest in the kingdom now and not bury them in the sand for fear of loss or punishment. This encourages us to give our resources generously so that Reveille can do the work of the kingdom aggressively. The parable also speaks to Reveille Church itself. Reveille has been given enormous resources, often because of the sacrifice of so many people. We are a five-talent church. We therefore must make sure that we are investing those resources well and aggressively to serve the kingdom of God through our community.

This week, we had an amazing group come together to wrap all of the gifts for delivery to Shineforth, formerly UMFS.
